Garden detailAbout the Artist

Katharine Taylor began her university education at Hillsdale College, Michigan, in 1998, never having taken a formal art class in her life. Her family homeschooled from her early elementary years through her graduation from high school. Although she did not receive any formal art education, her parents encouraged her desire to draw, and provided Taylor and her siblings with all the art supplies they needed. This nuturing background and the self-discipline and love of learning imparted through her home education helped prepare Taylor for a career as an artist.

At Hillsdale College, Taylor majored in art with minors in English and Spanish. Hillsdale's art department promoted realism and a traditional approach, a good foundation for any young artist. While a student, Taylor's paintings and drawings won awards in the semi-annual Hillsdale College Juried Student Art Show, as well as in the Mid-Michigan Small College Art Competition. She graduated from Hillsdale in 2002, Summa Cum Laude and valedictorian of her class.

After graduation Taylor worked for Hillsdale College as an archivist in the art department, while continuing to develop her skills as a painter. She received several portrait commissions and worked on a joint project with sculptor Allison Streett depicting the Biblical story of the conversion of Paul.

Taylor now works near St. Louis, Missouri, as a full-time graphic designer in the Public Relations department of a major law firm. She lives with her husband Ryan and their pet bird, Norman.
